Shopify theme upgrade

Your theme is quietly costing you sales.

Older Shopify themes load slower, can't use modern app blocks, and get harder to edit every year. We upgrade you to a clean Online Store 2.0 foundation — same brand, far better performance, no rebuild from scratch.

Why it matters

What a theme upgrade actually changes

A theme upgrade isn't cosmetic. It's the foundation everything else on your store sits on — speed, apps, editing, and how much a developer has to charge you for future work.

Speed & Core Web Vitals

Modern themes ship leaner code, native lazy-loading and responsive images. Faster pages lift mobile conversion and help Google rankings — the two things older themes silently drag down.

App blocks & sections everywhere

Online Store 2.0 lets apps drop into any page as blocks, and lets you build product and collection layouts in the editor. On older themes, every one of those changes is a paid developer ticket.

Your team can edit it

Metafields, dynamic sources and reusable sections mean marketing can launch a landing page or seasonal layout without touching code — or waiting on an agency.

Security & supportability

Themes that are years behind stop receiving fixes, and heavily hand-edited themes can't take official updates at all. Upgrading puts you back on a supported, patchable base.

AI & agentic readiness

Modern themes emit cleaner semantic markup and structured data — the exact signals AI answer engines and shopping agents read. Old themes are often invisible to them.

Cheaper to change later

Every future project — a new app, a CRO test, a campaign page — is quicker and cheaper on a modern theme. The upgrade pays for itself across the next few tickets.

What happens if you don't upgrade

None of this breaks overnight. That's exactly why it's easy to keep postponing — and why the cost compounds quietly.

  • Slower pages, lower mobile conversion. Speed gaps widen every year as competitors upgrade.
  • New apps won't install cleanly. App-block-only apps need OS 2.0 — otherwise it's custom code every time.
  • Rising dev costs. Simple edits take longer on legacy code, so routine changes keep getting more expensive.
  • No official updates. Hand-edited themes drift too far to accept vendor patches or fixes.
  • Weak SEO & AI visibility. Missing structured data and messy markup keep you out of AI answers.
  • A forced rebuild later. Postpone long enough and the cheap upgrade becomes a full, far pricier redesign.
Timeline

How an upgrade runs

Typically 1–3 weeks end to end, depending on tier. Your live store stays untouched — we build on a duplicate theme and only publish once you've signed off.

1

Audit & plan

Days 1–2

We inventory your current theme, customisations, apps and templates, then map exactly what carries over.

2

Build on a copy

Days 3–9

Your design is rebuilt on a modern OS 2.0 base, with customisations re-implemented cleanly as sections and blocks.

3

QA & your review

Days 9–12

Cross-device and cross-browser testing, speed checks, app re-testing — then you review on a preview link.

4

Go live & support

Day 12+

We publish at a quiet traffic window, monitor closely, and stay on support through the included window.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Will my store look different after the upgrade?
No — that's the point. We preserve your existing design and brand. What changes is the foundation underneath: cleaner code, modern sections, app-block support and better speed. If you want design changes, we can scope those separately.
Will my live store go down during the upgrade?
No. We build on a duplicate of your theme, so your live store keeps running normally the whole time. We only publish after you've reviewed and approved a preview link, and we schedule that at a low-traffic window.
What about my apps and customisations?
We inventory them upfront during the audit. Existing customisations get re-implemented cleanly on the new theme (usually as proper sections or blocks rather than hard-coded edits), and apps are reinstalled and re-tested before launch.
How do I know which package I need?
Run the free detector above — it tells us your theme, version and whether it's already OS 2.0. As a rule: a mostly stock theme is Essential, a moderately customised store with a handful of custom templates is Advanced, and a heavily bespoke or hand-edited theme is Bespoke. We confirm before any payment.
Is this the same as a redesign?
No — and it's much cheaper than one. An upgrade modernises the technical foundation while keeping your look. A redesign changes how the store looks and works. If you need both, an upgrade first is usually the cheaper sequence.
My theme is heavily hand-edited. Can it still be upgraded?
Yes, and it's usually the case that benefits most — hand-edited themes are exactly the ones that can no longer take official updates. Those need the Bespoke tier so we can properly re-implement the custom work rather than patch around it.
